Verizon PC5740 wireless broadband card and Linux authentication

June 17th, 2009

There are a bunch of tutorials out there and people having success (and not) getting the PC5740 Verizon wireless card to work under Linux. I had configured it to work using Ubuntu 9.04 – It didn’t work at first.

when I ran wvdial, it connected to the peer and failed authentication every time.  I talked to a co-worker who had installed on Suse the year before, and he recalled having the same issue, then trying it on windows – then it worked on Linux. So, I put the card in a windows box and went through setup, verified it worked, then fired up Ubuntu and it worked fine. CSR for Verizon confirmed that the first time there is a code that is transmitted.

The reason for this post is so that someone else will find it useful sooner or later. Install on Window$, tell it your phone number, then go back to Linux.
